What does a portable software/hardware mean or do?

Toshia Metzker: The portable one typically runs off one executable (.exe) file and also stores its settings in the same folder. It might have other dll and ini files with it to store settings and preferences but they are all located in the one folder which you take with you on a flash drive or similar, hence the name portable. However most software you have to pay for (especially the likes of Photoshop and Audition) is not supposed to be portable. People have converted it to a portable edition that can be easily copied without having to license it.Often it does miss some features that haven't been able to be made portable. For instance Adobe Audition doesn't do everything in portable form and it doesn't interact with your computers hardware as well either. I know cos I've got the pirate version ;)...Show more

Mack Ukich: Thank you for the information, I didn't know that, it's good to learn new things.

Coralie Goldsberry: Portable software is designed to b! e installed and run from a USB "thumb" drive. That way you can take it with you and run it from any computer you plug into.

Curt Broadhead: Is the portable missing any features from the original software/hardware?

Rachal Osaki: I have the answer to half the part. Portable ones are easy to transfer. You can upload it really quick and download it from somewhere else again, too quickly. Say you have a 512 MB pen drive and you are way too low on space and can't get in a 500 MB setup of Photoshop or whatever, take the portable one that weighs around a 100 MB ! =DAnd you don't even need to install it. It's just a single file that works on any decent computer!...Show more
