Can someone please explain how Tivo works?

Garry Ohmen: You hook the cable line coming from your wall to the cable box. It is the cable in. Then get another cable line and run that from cable out of your cable box to the tivo in then run another cable from the tivo box to your tv. You will also have to use the infrared cable that comes with tivo to control your cable box. You will also have to have a tivo account for all this to work. When you have everything up and running you then control everyhting with your tivo remote Go to tivo.com and register. Here is a sit that may help some.http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/tivo.htmgood luck...Show more

Joan Stavropoulos: Hi Phil,TiVo records shows onto an internal hard drive. There are several types of DVD recorders but we pre! fer TiVO because of simplicity of use. The schedule is always correct because it is updated every day. I can program TiVO to record from out of town over the Internet. TiVO learns what you like and recommends shows that you might like. Often times we never would have known they were on. You can program an entire season of a given series with a single click and TiVO never forgets. You can tell TiVO you like someone or something and it will locate shows for you. For example if you tell it you like John Wayne it will watch for and record anything he is on.With my series 2 TiVO I can transfer recordings to my computer, edit them if desired then record them to a DVD. You can also allow TiVO to share pictures and music from your computer. It will play the music and slide shows on your TV.I could go on and on about TiVO. There is one downside and that is the monthly (you can pay yearly if you want) fee.To learn all about TiVO check their web site here - https://www3.tivo.comCheck ! the TiVO user forum here - http://www.tivocommunity.comThe TiV! O Community Store often has good bargains for TiVOs or accessories. Check them for current pricing along with your local Best Buy - http://store.tivocommunity.com/merchant....You need either a phone line or internet connection for TiVO to download software updates and program information.Norm...Show more

Idell Mulliniks: i am with cablevision as well

Travis Sherrock: I have satellite and the signal comes in through the Tivo and into the television.

Demetrius Coaster: Tivo is basically a VCR with a bigger brain, and a hard drive instead of a video tape. You purchase the Tivo unit, and then you must purchase a service subscription that provides the unit with TV schedule data. You can purchase a monthly, annual, or life-time subscription. The life-time subscription is about $300 but only covers the lifetime of the Tivo unit not your lifetime. The Tivo can use your phone line or home network to connect to the internet to download the TV data. Tivo can operate ! with your antenna or cable TV system - but this requires you to rent a cablecard from your cable TV company ($3-5/mo?) Unfortunately Tivo will not work with satellite TV providers (see Alternatives, below.) Tivo is a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). So unlike a VCR you simply punch in the name of the show - not the channel or time. For instance, if I punch in a show title, like, "The Simpsons", the Tivo searches the TV schedule and sets up the recordings for you. If two or more shows are on at the same time, Tivo picks the show you said was the higher priority. You can also use the Tivo as a standard VCR - telling it what day, time, channel and duration to record. Alternatives: At over $500 including the subscription, Tivo is pretty expensive however it is the best DVR on the market. If that's out of your price range, you can get a DVR that does not use TV schedule data, so it's basically a dumb VCR with a hard drive. If you only record a few shows a week, that's really all yo! u need and they're about $200. On the other hand, if you have cable or ! satellite TV, you can rent a DVR from them for about $10/mo....Show more
