Is becoming a High School Physical Education teacher a good career choice? why or why not?

Lana Uliano: you can't really know if you don't do your own research. try and give a look on these job offers from the databe of the below site of jobs. I think it should help only if you are from usacheers!

Gaylord Barragan: No... jus-just no.

Verdie Wollen: all I know is it doesn't pay well. you make dog $hit

Letitia Bigelow: PE teachers are a dime a dozen, do something special with your life and become a Special Ed. teacher, its very rewarding. I see you are only interested in High School but to be an elementary school teacher especially kindergarten is very important, this is where you mold a child. you can make him either want to learn or let him slide by. either love school or hate it. These tender years are very important but you must love children?? Maybenot as much money but the personal reward are better, and the little people aren't as smart mouthed as the High School know it all's....Show more

Derick Kinnard: As a PE teacher certif! ied in MI, I believe the job can be rewarding, if you enjoy it and dont mind the low pay that goes with it. The problem is in the job opportunities that open to you.Starting teachers make about 27-35,000 a year. I believe that right now, the job market isn't really strong for PE teachers. Our programs get cut a lot, more teachers are starting to stay in their jobs and many are not retiring. Theres not a lot of job opportunities in the field and a lot of people I know substitute for 2-10 years before even a positions open for them. I read it a few months ago that in MI alone, there is about 250,000 students that graduate in education every year, but really only 70,000 education jobs that open a year. That a lot of people who will not be able to work. I remember two years ago when a PE position opened up about 45 minutes from where I live and 150 applicants posted for the job. If you get certified and apply you, you will have a lot of competition in your job applications. I a! lso know two other fellow colleagues who graduated with me, an! d we all pursued a MOT/ rehabiliation career due to lack of available teaching positions. While I cant say that this will occur to you and that the situation will be the same in NY, I just want you to know as it is information related to your field of interest and as a cautionary tale.If you are truly interested in the career, dont let this info stop you. I have taught PE for a year K-12 before recieving the pink slip. It is a truly rewarding career and I enjoyed and loved teaching my students. It's just a shame that opportunities arent as plentiful as other careers....Show more

Elvin Weichbrodt: Unfortunately high school kids can be very lazy and hard to work with, and being a PE teacher can be trying and unrewarding. I should know, I'm a high schooler! If you're still interested, I'm sure there are some positions in your area. You sound very fit, so another idea is to become a personal trainer. I have no idea what the process is to become one, but do some research! ; you must be a great motivator! Hope this helps, and good luck deciding!...Show more

Donald Caravalho: In NY, physical education teachers are paid the same amount as any other teacher of equal standing (number of years teaching and level of education--master's is needed within 5 years-master's and PHD usually get a raise). There are significantly less Physical education teachers needed and there are usually many applicants for each position. Elementary, English, History, and Physical education are flooded with teachers, but some areas (usually further away from colleges with an education program) do have a need for all teachers. In my area, even high needs areas are flooded with applicants....Show more
